Background of the study
Digital pragmatic strategies are essential for effective online communication, shaping how users convey tone, intent, and social cues. In Nigeria, Facebook and Twitter serve as prominent platforms where distinct pragmatic approaches are evident. Facebook, with its long‐form posts and extensive comment sections, enables users to deploy elaborate pragmatic markers—such as discourse connectors, emotive punctuation, and contextual cues—to manage interactions and express identity (Ibrahim, 2023). Conversely, Twitter’s character constraints force users to adopt concise pragmatic strategies, including abbreviations, hashtags, and emojis, to achieve clarity and impact. These differences reflect not only the technological affordances of each platform but also the cultural and situational contexts of Nigerian digital discourse (Adeola, 2023). This study compares the pragmatic strategies on Facebook and Twitter to uncover how platform-specific features influence language use. The analysis will contribute to theoretical models of digital pragmatics and provide practical insights into improving online communication effectiveness (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although pragmatic strategies are recognized as crucial in digital communication, there is limited comparative research on how these strategies vary between Facebook and Twitter among Nigerian users. Existing literature often focuses on one platform in isolation, neglecting the interplay of context, audience, and technological constraints on pragmatic language use (Chinwe, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of how digital pragmatics evolve in different online environments, leaving educators and communicators without clear guidelines for adapting language instruction to modern communication trends (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
1. To identify and compare pragmatic strategies on Facebook and Twitter.
2. To analyze the influence of platform features on pragmatic marker usage.
3. To propose models for effective digital communication.
Research questions
1. What are the predominant pragmatic strategies on each platform?
2. How do platform-specific features affect these strategies?
3. What are the implications for online communication effectiveness?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative evaluation of digital pragmatic strategies in Nigerian online communication, informing both theory and practice. The findings will guide educators and policymakers in adapting to the evolving landscape of digital discourse (Ibrahim, 2023; Obi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing pragmatic strategies on Nigerian Facebook posts and Twitter messages, excluding other digital platforms and offline contexts.
Definitions of terms
